If there’s one thing I’ve learned after years of planning weddings, it’s this: There isn’t one right way to have a beautiful wedding.
Some celebrations are filled with lush florals and candlelight. Others are intimate dinners shared with immediate family beneath the stars. Some couples spend months designing every thoughtful detail, while others dream of an incredible dance floor, an unforgettable meal, or exchanging vows in a quiet garden with the people who matter most. Every one of those weddings can be beautiful.
The difference isn’t found in the budget, the guest count, or whether a wedding includes the latest trends. The difference is whether the celebration genuinely reflects the couple at the center of it.
To me, that’s what intentional wedding planning is all about.
Today’s couples have access to more inspiration than ever before. Pinterest boards, Instagram feeds, TikTok videos, wedding blogs, and beautifully curated galleries allow us to explore celebrations from around the world with just a few taps. As a Florida wedding planner, I genuinely love this part of the planning process. Inspiration introduces couples to ideas they may never have discovered on their own and helps them begin imagining what their wedding could become.
The challenge isn’t inspiration.
The challenge is what sometimes happens after it.
Somewhere between collecting ideas and making decisions, inspiration has a way of quietly becoming comparison. Without even realizing it, couples begin wondering whether their wedding will be beautiful enough, memorable enough, or impressive enough compared to the weddings filling their screens.
That’s where the joy of planning can begin to disappear.
When I use the phrase ‘intentional wedding planning’, I’m not talking about saying no to trends or choosing simplicity over luxury. I certainly don’t believe couples should stop appreciating beautiful details. If you’ve followed WCO Events for any length of time, you know how much I value thoughtful design. Beautiful florals, carefully curated tablescapes, custom paper goods, and meaningful personal touches all have the power to elevate a wedding and create an unforgettable experience.
Intentional wedding planning simply asks a different question.
Instead of asking, “What should our wedding look like?” it asks, “What do we want our wedding to say about us?”
That’s an important distinction.
When your decisions are rooted in your relationship, your priorities, and the experience you hope to create, everything else begins to fall into place naturally. Design choices become more cohesive. Your budget starts reflecting what matters most to you. Saying “yes” becomes easier because you’ve established a clear vision, and saying “no” becomes easier because you understand that not every beautiful idea belongs in your wedding.
One of my favorite parts of working with couples is watching that vision become clearer over time. Rarely do couples completely change directions. Instead, they refine their ideas. They begin letting go of the details they thought they were supposed to have and lean into the elements that genuinely feel like them. Their vision becomes more focused, more personal, and ultimately more meaningful.
That’s intentional wedding planning.
Social media has transformed the wedding industry in so many positive ways. Couples planning a Key West wedding can discover tropical garden ceremonies long before they ever visit the island. Couples considering a Tampa wedding can explore waterfront venues, historic hotels, and modern event spaces from across the country. Those dreaming of a St. Augustine wedding can fall in love with centuries-old architecture and charming brick streets before scheduling a single tour.
That kind of access is incredible.
It encourages creativity, introduces couples to talented vendors, and reminds us that there are countless ways to celebrate a marriage. But it’s also important to remember what we’re actually seeing.
Most of the weddings that appear in our feeds are highlights. They’re photographed by incredibly talented professionals whose job is to capture every celebration at its absolute best. Sometimes they’re editorial shoots created specifically to inspire the industry. Other times they’re luxury weddings with budgets, priorities, or circumstances that may be completely different from your own.
One pattern I’ve noticed over the years is that comparison almost always points in one direction. Couples rarely compare themselves to weddings with smaller budgets. Instead, they compare themselves to larger floral installations, more elaborate décor, bigger entertainment budgets, or venues that were never part of their original vision in the first place.
The problem is that you’re no longer comparing weddings.
You’re comparing entirely different priorities, entirely different budgets, and entirely different stories.
That’s simply not a fair comparison.
The wedding that inspires you online may have been exactly right for that couple. That doesn’t automatically make it right for you.
One misconception I often hear is that choosing intentionally means choosing less.
I don’t believe that’s true.
Intentional wedding planning isn’t about minimizing your celebration or avoiding luxury. It’s about ensuring that every investment, every design decision, and every meaningful detail supports the story you’re telling.
If custom stationery has always been part of your vision, embrace it. Do florals make your heart skip a beat? Don’t apologize for loving them. If your dream Florida wedding includes an intimate dinner beneath café lights, that’s just as beautiful as a grand celebration with one hundred guests.
There isn’t one right way to have a beautiful wedding because every couple defines beauty differently.
After years of planning weddings throughout Florida, I’ve found that the couples who enjoy the planning process the most aren’t necessarily the ones with the largest budgets. They’re the couples who become confident in their priorities. They appreciate inspiration without allowing it to dictate every decision. They create weddings that feel authentic instead of expected.
Ironically, those are often the celebrations guests remember most. Not because they were the biggest or the trendiest. But because they felt genuine.
If there’s one piece of advice I hope every couple carries with them, it’s this:
Keep saving the inspiration, and build the Pinterest boards.Follow the photographers whose work makes you stop scrolling, and dream about the possibilities.
Just don’t let someone else’s wedding become the standard for your own.
Your wedding is one chapter in a much larger story. A story that belongs only to the two of you. The details you choose, the people you invite, the moments you prioritize, and the experience you create should reflect that story above anything else.
The goal isn’t to have the most beautiful wedding. The goal is to have the most beautiful version of your wedding.
Because there isn’t one right way to have a beautiful wedding, and there never has been.
Your story is beautiful all on its own.
